Do you know of any CTAN site where I can read-only NFS mount the CTAN files and thus not have to ftp them? This will save me quite an amount of effort. As announced in last week's UKTeX Digest, the "daughter" UK TeX Archive on ftp.tex.ac.uk has the archive exported read-only. My announcement gave some details for mounting this from a Sun client. However, I've just attempted this on my workstation (IPC running SunOS 4.1.3 and a modified /usr/lib/libc which uses DNS for hostname resolution). I expected mount -o ro,nosuid,bg ftp.tex.ac.uk:/work/ftp/pub/archive /mnt to work, but that provoked mount: ftp.tex.ac.uk:/work/ftp/pub/archive: RPC: Unknown host because the hostname wasn't being resolved. Replacing the domain name with the IP address (134.151.44.19) succeeds, however: mount -o ro,nosuid,bg 134.151.44.19:/work/ftp/pub/archive /mnt I'd recommend that you make use of the automounter to mount the filesystem on demand and unmount it when it's not being used. ~~David Osborne (pp UK TeX Archive group) ------------------------------ Date: 20 Aug 1993 17:27:00 From: P.M.Cray@uk.ac.salford.physics Subject: Euler Fonts I would like to use the Euler fonts for setting mathematics. Unfortunately when I replace the definitions of the cm math mode fonts with the Euler fonts the output looks horrible with characters lying on top of one another and subscripts totally misplaced, etc. I assume this is due to the machinations of the rest of plain.tex. Is there an easy way to fix the problem or is there a style file availible anywhere for using the Euler fonts in straight TeX (not LaTeX or AMS-TeX)? Thanks in advance for your help. Paul M. Some of the dingbats are misformed, though I have not examined the callig font closely enough to see whether the problems there are serious. Does anyone have enough knowledge of MF to know what is wrong here? Mike Piff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1993 19:53:00 +0000 From: DODD_NA@uk.co.colloquium Subject: emtex 600dpi HPLJ4 Emtex dvidrv 1.4s HPLJ4 at 600dpi - please help! Syptoms: The correct 600dpi fonts are (generated and) used by dvidrv, but the printer prints at 300dpi making all the text appear twice as big (linearly) as it should be. Thus cmr10 comes out as a 20 point font. Details: dvidrv 1.4s 04-Nov-1992. The .CNF file is as follows % lj6.cnf (600x600 DPI using LJ fonts) /pd={,$DVIDRVINPUT:}@i /pl=$DVIDRVFONTS:lj_{0,h,1,2,3,4,5a,5b,sli} /pf=$DVIDRVFONTS:pixel.lj\@Rrdpi\@f{.pk,.pxl} /pg={,$DVIDRVGRAPH:}{@Rrdpi\,}@PBf{@Ef,.msp,.pcx,.bmp} /r=600 /rf=600 /fs=1 /fm=hplaser /fd=2 /fb /pl=c:\texfonts /og=600 It makes no difference to the printer's output whether /og=600 is not set at all. However, if I send the output to a file and compare two such files, one created with /og=600 and the other without, the files differ only in the eleventh byte which is ASCII 6 for the file created with /og=600 and ASCII 3 for the file created without /og being set. The surrounding bytes agree with the Raster Graphics commands for setting raster resolution in the Printer Command Language (PCL). The printer is set to its factory default of 600dpi and has 6Mb of memory. Has anyone succeeded in getting the HPLaserjet 4 to work at 600dpi from the Emtex drivers? Any help would be much appreciated. I've stopped making the library available separately, since that was causing maintenance hassles. The library is part of the xdvik distribution. I've established a mailing list, tex-k@cs.umb.edu, for bug reports and discussions for the TeX-related stuff I maintain. I hope this will provide for sharing of interim fixes, quicker help when I cannot respond immediately, and so on. To join, email tex-k-request@cs.umb.edu with a message whose body contains a line subscribe your-preferred-email-address I expect to release a new version of dvipsk shortly, perhaps within a week or two. web2c will follow as soon as possible. Here's the NEWS: kpathsea: * Routines to look up TeX font files, default path specifications, etc. * Sort-of pattern matching: /foo//bar matches subdirectories /foo/a/bar, /foo/b/bar, /foo/a1/a2/bar, etc. * $var and ${var} expansion. * Support for MakeTeX... scripts. * Support for fallback resolutions and font. * Lazy evaluation of path elements. * Some runtime debugging support. xdvik: * Rewrite font finding routines to use the new kpathsea facilities. * Update for xdvi patchlevel 17. psfonts: * In Adobe StandardEncoding, and named with leading `r', for the new xdvik. * TFM widths in the PK files match those in the TFM files. * Umlaut character has been corrected (in the GS fonts). * Encoding of psyr* (the symbol font) matches Adobe's. karl@cs.umb.edu Help fight the new programming monopolies -- write lpf@uunet.uu.net. ------------------------------ UK TeX ARCHIVE at ASTON UNIVERSITY >>> UK.AC.TEX <<< *** Interactive and file transfer access *** JANET: uk.ac.tex (DTE 000020120091) Username: public, Password: public Internet: tex.ac.uk [134.151.40.18] -- telnet/rlogin, anonymous ftp ftp.tex.ac.uk [134.151.44.19] -- anonymous ftp, gopher, NFS For telnet access, login: public, password: public For anonymous ftp, login: anonymous, password: *** Mail server *** Send mail to TeXserver@uk.ac.tex (JANET) or TeXserver@tex.ac.uk (rest of the world) with message body containing the word HELP \section FILES OF INTEREST [tex-archive]00readme.txt [tex-archive]00index.files [tex-archive]0000index.zip_vve [tex-archive]00last7days.files [tex-archive]00last7days.zip_vve [tex-archive]00last30days.files [tex-archive]00last30days.zip_vve [tex-archive.doc]TeX-FAQ.txt (Frequently Asked Questions list) [tex-archive.doc]FAQ-Supplement-*.txt (FAQ supplement) \section DIGESTS This year's UKTeX back issues are stored in the archive in directory [tex-archive.digests.uktex.93] This year's TeXhax back issues are stored in the archive in directory [tex-archive.digests.texhax.93] Latest TeXhax: V93 #12 \section MEDIA DISTRIBUTIONS Postal addresses are given below. \subsection Washington Unix TeX distribution tape Latest copy of May/June 1991 contains: TeX 3.14, LaTeX 2.09, Metafont 2.7, plus many utilities suitable for Unix 4.2/4.3BSD & System V tar format, 1 file (36Mb) One Quarter-Inch Cartridge, QIC-120 or QIC-150 format (DC600A or DC6150) sent with envelope AND stamps for return postage to **Nottingham** (Due to currency exchange, this service is offered only within the UK) \section TeX IMPLEMENTATIONS FOR SMALL COMPUTERS \subsection OzTeX for Macintosh No longer distributed on disk from Aston, though it continues to be available in the Archive for network access.
